The annual St. Paul's Music Festival begins this weekend. The Festival is a week of the best music in the Worcester area - which is really very good. Here's the schedule:

Sunday, June 3
The New England Ringers

Monday June 4

Tracy Kraus, Peter Sulski, Mark Berger, Maria Ferrante, Ian Watson and Jonathan Yasuda perform a lively program featuring the C minor Piano Quartet, Op 60 of Johannes Brahms. Also on the program are piano music for 4 hands by Mozart, Rossini songs, and a little known gem by Friedrich Kuhlau, the Flute Quintet, Op. 51 for flute and string quartet.

Jointly sponsored by Salisbury Singers and Mastersingers of Worcester

In preparation for our joint concert tour to Europe, the Salisbury Singers and the Mastersingers of Worcester will once again collaborate in presenting the best in American musical traditions. Spirituals, folk songs, and new arrangements of traditional songs will fill the magnificent space of the Cathedral of St. Paul and the choruses will premiere a new work by Gwyneth Walker, New England Journey. The concert will also feature a performance of the popular Missa Kenya by Paul Basler.

The St. Paul's Cathedral Choir will present Advent Lessons and Carols this Sunday, December 3 at 4 pm. The musical selections will include Adam Lay Y-bounden, Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, The Truth From Above, and of course, The Angel Gabriel.

St. Paul's Cathedral Choir will perform Mozart's Coronation Mass in C on Sunday, October 22 at 4 pm at St. Paul's Cathedral in Worcester. Cost is $20 per person, $10 seniors, students and children.

From its opening bars, the Coronation Mass sparkles with energy. The majestic rhythms of the Kyrie are triumphant. The Gloria explodes in a fast triple meter. The Sanctus is marked maestoso ("majestically"). The Hosanna, brisk and joyful, contrasts with the vocal quartet's gentler Benedictus. For the Agnus Dei, Mozart breaks the Mass's format (quartet rather than individual arias) with a glorious aria for soprano. Written in pastoral style, it is his moving response to the image of Christ as Lamb of God (Agnus Dei). (adapted from The Boston Cecilia)

Thank you to everyone who helped and supported tonight's Mozart on the Menu fundraiser for the Music Festival. Your support enables Cathedral Music in Worcester to provide the best possible concerts at the least possible cost so that everyone can enjoy good music.

I hope that you can make it to some of the wonderful concerts scheduled.

Listening to the perfomers tonight, it struck me again how many wonderful, talented musicians we have in Worcester. Recently, a 30 piece orchestra has been formed with the same goal as Cathedral Music - to bring the best possible musical performances to as many people as possible. The Worcester Collegium, directed by Peter Sulski, will make their debut performance during the Music Festival.

On May 18th at 7pm, there will be a benefit dinner and concert for the 4th St. Paul's Music Festival celebrating Mozart (the 250th anniversary of his birth is this year). If you are interested in attending, please contact the Cathedral Music office at 508-754-9822.

The benefit should be a fun night with good food, good company, and great music.

The St. Paul's Music Festival is a week of music, usually an organ concert at noon and another a vocal concert in the evening. Many of the concerts are free of charge. This year, the finale of the Festival will be the St. Paul's Cathedral Choir singing Mozart's Requiem. I hope to have a full schedule to post soon.

On Palm Sunday, April 9, a Tenebrae service will be held at St. Paul's Cathedral in Worcester at 7pm.

This beautiful service of Scripture Readings and hymns symbolizes the temporary triumph of evil over good. One by one the candles are extinguished until only the Christ Candle remains. The Christ Candle is then hidden and there is the strepitus, a loud noise symbolizing the earthquake at the time of Christ's death. The Christ Candle then reappears, reminding us to look forward to Christ's Resurrection. Tenebrae is a great way to begin Holy Week and prepare for the event of Holy Week.

If you've never before attended a Tenebrae service, or if you haven't had a chance to hear the Cathedral Choir, please consider coming. You'll thank me for it.
